Black Templars Sword Brethren - Warhammer 40,000
PARAMETERS:
Add the honoured veterans of the Black Templars to your crusade with the Sword Brethren. Armed with an impressive collection of powered blades, pistols and brutal close combat weapons, these knightly warriors form a highly detailed and characterful unit for Warhammer 40,000.
Product description
Every Sword Brother has earned his place among the Marshal's household through unwavering faith, martial excellence and spectacular acts of violence against the enemies of the Imperium. They are experienced champions who have survived countless battles and proved themselves worthy of standing among the elite of their crusade.
This multipart plastic kit builds five Black Templars Sword Brethren. The models can be equipped with a varied collection of melee and ranged weapons, allowing each warrior to appear as an individual veteran rather than part of a uniform squad.
The set also includes components for representing a Castellan, along with numerous alternative heads, backpack decorations and tilting plates. These options make the kit suitable for building a complete Sword Brethren unit, creating a distinctive commander or providing parts for Black Templars conversion projects.
The Marshal's chosen warriors
Sword Brethren are selected from the most accomplished warriors within a Black Templars crusade. Their position is not granted simply through length of service, but earned through bravery, uncompromising devotion and repeated victory against powerful enemies.
These veterans form the household of a Marshal and may serve as trusted advisors, personal champions or elite warriors deployed against the most dangerous opponents. Each Sword Brother is expected to demonstrate both independent judgement and absolute loyalty to the goals of the crusade.
The miniatures reflect their elevated status through decorated armour, tabards, chains, purity seals and personal heraldry. Their equipment is more varied than that of ordinary battle-brothers, emphasising the individual honours and preferred fighting style of each veteran.
Varied melee weapons
The kit contains an extensive range of close combat weapons suitable for the aggressive fighting style of the Black Templars.
The available modelling options include Astartes chainswords, power swords, a power maul, a power axe, paired lightning claws and a thunder hammer. These weapons create dramatically different silhouettes and allow the squad to look like a gathering of individual champions.
The power swords provide the classic knightly appearance associated with the Black Templars, while the power axe and power maul introduce heavier weapon shapes. The thunder hammer gives one warrior an especially imposing profile, and the paired lightning claws create a dynamic model prepared to tear through the enemy at close range.
These are alternative physical assembly options. The same bodies and arms are used for different configurations, so a single set cannot produce every possible weapon combination simultaneously.
Pistols and ranged weapons
The Sword Brethren can also be modelled with a selection of pistols, including heavy bolt pistols, pyre pistols and plasma pistols.
These weapons can be combined with the available melee options to create varied poses and individual fighting styles. A warrior carrying a pyre pistol may appear ready to purge enemies at close range, while a plasma pistol can provide a more technological contrast to the Chapter's medieval visual identity.
The kit contains a broad collection of modelling components, but the physical options included in the box should not be treated as a statement of current tabletop rules. Legal equipment combinations should always be checked in the latest Games Workshop publications.
Optional Castellan
One of the five models can be assembled using the distinctive components intended to represent a Black Templars Castellan.
The Castellan can be modelled with a master-crafted power sword or an Astartes chainsword in the right hand. Options for the other hand include a heavy bolt pistol, an auto-plasma weapon or a skull relic.
The model features more elaborate robes and decorations, helping the Castellan stand apart from the other Sword Brethren. These components can also be used to create a visually distinctive leader within the unit.
Building the Castellan uses one of the five included bodies. It does not create an additional sixth miniature. A single box can therefore be assembled as five Sword Brethren or as one Castellan and four Sword Brethren.
Individual heads and heraldry
The set includes a range of helmeted and uncovered heads that can be used to give each veteran a distinctive appearance.
Crusader-style helmets reinforce the knightly character of the Black Templars, while bare heads allow individual expressions, scars and skin tones to become part of the finished unit.
Backpack finials and tilting plates provide further personalisation. These decorative elements can be painted with crusade badges, personal heraldry, devotional markings or the red and white insignia traditionally associated with the Sword Brethren.
The wide selection of details helps communicate that these warriors have each followed a unique path to earn their place among the Marshal's chosen.
Detailed armour and painting opportunities
Sword Brethren are covered with the chains, tabards, relics and symbols that define the appearance of the Black Templars. Their armour combines the advanced construction of Space Marine wargear with the aesthetic of ancient crusading knights.
The black armour can be highlighted with cool greys, blue-grey tones or subtle metallic wear. Red shoulder trim and heraldic markings provide a strong contrast, while white or cream tabards can create a lighter central area on each miniature.
Power weapons offer opportunities for glowing energy effects, bright blades or restrained metallic finishes. Thunder hammers, chainswords and lightning claws can be given scratches, heat staining and signs of prolonged battlefield use.
The different pistols provide additional technological details, including weapon casings, plasma coils and fuel systems. Gold, brass and silver can be used across relics, chains and armour decorations to represent the honours accumulated by these veteran warriors.
Tilting plates and shoulder pads are ideal for individual heraldry. Painters can give each Sword Brother unique markings while maintaining a coherent black, red and white colour scheme across the full unit.
The included 40mm round bases provide space for Imperial ruins, cathedral floors, broken enemy weapons, scorched ground or other scenery inspired by the endless crusades of the Chapter.
Background
The Black Templars are a successor Chapter of the Imperial Fists founded by Sigismund, the first Emperor's Champion. Rather than ruling a single homeworld, they travel aboard immense crusade fleets and wage continuous war across the galaxy.
The Chapter rejects many elements of the Codex Astartes and organises its warriors according to the needs and traditions of each crusade. Sword Brethren occupy an honoured position within this structure, serving as the trusted veterans and champions of their Marshal.
Their armour often bears personal relics, heraldry and tokens representing previous victories. No two Sword Brethren need look identical, as each warrior has earned different honours during campaigns against aliens, traitors and heretics.
On the battlefield, they seek the fiercest fighting and the most dangerous opponents. Armed with powerful melee weapons and heavy pistols, they advance as a storm of blades, fire and religious fury.
To fight among the Sword Brethren is one of the greatest honours available to a Black Templar. It marks a warrior as a proven champion of the Chapter and places him among those who may one day rise to command a crusade of his own.
